Catherine Seo Teaches Blogging

Seo search engine optimizationToday at a retreat I am attending at Asilomar in Monterey, CA., I met Catherine Seo. Catherine teaches Business and Management at Cambridge College.

It turns out that Catherine is nuts about technology and in particular blogging. We spent a lot of time today talking blogging and technology, sharing links, talking about friends we have in common and I made a shameless pitch to come and be a guest speaker for her course this fall. She is calling my bluff!

Catherine and  I are going to be great friends and most likely need to talk Gmail into increasing the size of our inboxes.

One thing I need to do – get Catherine to get her blogs current and be a shinining example to all of those international students – 17 different countries.

Catherine was impressed by the story of our resident hero blogger  – Joseph Natividad, who is blazing new ground in the real estate blogosphere.

Talk about a great last name for a tech person – imagine how many people who do search engine optimization would love to have the name SEO!!!

    John,

Did you have the chance to ask SEO if students will be required, by top colleges and universities, to begin blogging?

I have heard through some research, that many of the top universities will require students to create, maintain, and show off their writing skills on a blog. This will become, if I am reading correctly, the newest form of admissions evaluation.

Could you ask Joseph if he has heard anything like this at all?

    Thanks!

    Dean,
Great question. EDUCAUSE http://www.educause.edu is an organization that supports and promotes technology in higher education. At a recent conference, the IT manager from MIT presentation focused on the mandatory BLOGGING done by entering students there. Creates community and support immediately. She also emphasized the importance of instructor interactivity.

I am requiring my Professional Seminar - Leadership Development class to BLOG throughout their Masters track. I have many international students from several different countries - their current BLOGS are linked at http://prosemdream.blogspot.com though after several long play sessions over the computer with John Harper will probably switch them over to WordPress in September.

    Thanks,
    Catherine

I’ve searched around for any articles on this topic and came up close to empty. This is the first time I’ve heard of universities using blogs as a basis for school admission.

Unless blogging becomes one of the main attractions on a person’s facebook or myspace page, then I’m not sure it would really catch on with the majority of America’s
    15-17 year olds.

There’s also the problem of low income students unable to get hold of a computer and an Internet connection on a regular basis.

I began blogging at the beginning of this year — too late to place a link to any of my blogs onto my college app.
