Evan O'Dorney, thirteen-year-old resident of Danville, Calif. is the Scripps National Spelling Bee champion. Evan won $35,000 cash, plus a $5,000 scholarship, a $2,500 savings bond and a set of reference works.

Spelling isn't at the top of Evan's favorites list. His favorite things to do are math and music. He is also dedicated to Tae Kwon Do and has earned a first degree black belt. He also loves to play piano.

The final day of competition began with 59 spellers remaining from the record 286 who started the competition.

During 12 rounds of competition, he had to spell: "compunctious," "corrigenda," "affiche," "corinne," "rascacio," "schuhplattler" and "laquear."

What excites a spelling champ? He's thrilled about going to math camp this summer and taking a calculus class at U.C. Berkeley.
