Shari Weiss Champions Social Media @ SFSU
Extreme Makeover for PR & Advertising Classes at San Francisco State University
Yesterday, Pat Kitano, Dean Guadagni and I were at SFSU speaking to Shari Weiss' classes on PR and Advertising. It was very interesting being back in a college classroom.
Shari loved Pat's pronouncement that "Advertising is Dying." That shook up a few students that were hoping for careers in advertising. The bad news is that the advertising industry is undergoing rapid evolution, advertising revenues are falling across all mediums and this industry is experiencing the same resistance to change as the real estate industry and the automobile industries.
Shari has thrown out the book and is reinventing the class in alignment with the impact of social networking and the impact that the Internet is having on our daily lives.
Shari has started a blog. I hope to be able to help her evolve her Internet presence rapidly. First order of business – get a stand-alone site.

I stayed after class and got a chance to discuss the overload of information that John and Dean had for us. Something I really wanted to find out was what are companies looking for in us online when they want to hire someone? Their answer was simple, think outside the box and display those thoughts in anyway possible online. They suggested that I tweet about what it takes to get my attention through advertising. This led me to think that when I watch television I always notice all sorts of flaws in how companies try to reach me. They said that tweeting my problems with these ads would be a great way to start out in the right direction. Their advise and information was priceless and has helped me start to see what it takes today to succeed in advertising, or social media networking, in an unknown future.

The kind of thinking that John, Dean, and Pat are encouraging in you matches my expectations in your Advertising group projects, i.e., that is that you brainstorm as a group to TELL THOSE BIG COMPANIES OUT THERE just what they ought to do to get your attention. Sounds like you are on the right track.

Thanks for coming to our PR class and speaking to us about the future of marketing, PR, and advertising. I am one of those students that was shook up about hearing that advertising is dying. I am really starting to understand how important it is to build an online presence, especially since I am graduating this semester and will be looking for a job.

Stephen – one thing you can do is go to http://www.meetup.com/ and look for local groups discussing what you are interested and attending. Start building your network and learn where like-minded people are putting their attention
