San Ramon Mixer

san ramon chamber commerceSan Ramon Chamber of Commerce Mixer

This month’s Chamber of Commerce Mixer, sponsored by and held at Club Sport Fitness Center in San Ramon, turned out to be a very well attended event with business people from all over the Bay Area.  The Harper Team was there in force with John Harper and Craig Harper moving through the crowd in opposite directions to ensure we would meet as many people as possible. (we need to coordinate our pic processing for the blog!)

One interesting fellow that Craig bumped into was Kevin Horan, Executive Dean of Diablo Valley College’s San Ramon Valley Campus. The new DVC San Ramon Campus is located in the Dougherty Valley area of San Ramon at 1690 Watermill Road in the same village as the Dougherty Station Library. Kevin was very excited about the new facilities which include 16 General Education classrooms, 3 Computer Labs, 2 Biology Labs, 1 Chemistry Lab, 1 Physics Lab, 1 Drawing Studio, 1 Painting Studio, 1 Ceramics Lab, 1 Math Lab, 1 Language Lab, 1 PE Studio and in the Fall 2007 they will also be offering a Medical Lab Technician program.

I (Craig) was beginning to get a little hungry so I grabbed some of the great hors d'oeuvres (seared ahi tuna was my favorite) and grabbed a table where I met Bobbi Greer, the Sales Manager for the Tri-Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau. They are located in Pleasanton and the interesting thing is that visitors bureau trivalleyPleasanton does not have its own convention center.  However, Bobbi, Natalie Alvanez (Director of Communications and Memberships who was also at the table) and the rest of the TVCVB staff provide the local expertise to track down and make whatever arrangements a company or group needs for handling all the logistics of pulling off a meeting, seminar, convention or just playing tourist.

bollinger canyon san ramon caI (John) picked up about a dozen business cards and Craig did the same. I didn't get this young lady's. She is a massage therapist at Club Sport. She is from Brazil and was a judge in that country.

club sportI also snapped a pic of Rich McVey, the official photographer for the event. I asked Rich if he was looking for more business. He informed me that he has reached that point in life where he is very particular of the work he takes on. He's having a great time, loves the work he does and has a golf foursome that rocks.

san ramon cateringThere was an awesome spread of food provided by A Tasteful Affair caterers. I had a great chat with owner Peggy Welch about blogging and the impact it could have on her catering business in the San Ramon Valley. Here is a pic of Peggy and her daughter.

Some of the other cards I collected:

And last but not least - Sandy Parkins my competitor over at Prudential Realty smiling here because the local real estate market in San Ramon is just awesome!

24 Hour Fitness - San Ramon, CA

24 hour fitness san ramonI’ve been spending more and more time at 24 Hour Fitness. When I moved to San Ramon, CA, I looked for the closest 24 Hour Fitness because I had a membership with them in Utah. The club in San Ramon is large – lots of everything.

san ramon norris canyonThe club is conveniently located on Norris Canyon which puts it halfway between Crow Canyon and Bollinger Canyon. Did I say convenient? Make that super-convenient – right smack dab in the middle of the biggest congregation of working population in San Ramon – Bishop Ranch.

When I first came to this club on Norris Canyon, they were remodeling the men’s locker room so the showers, and toilets where in trailers. When I moved into a condo with a small workout room, it wasn’t hard to let 24 Hour Fitness go. But after a few months, I noticed I wasn’t working out at the condo because the room provided was cramped – throw a few workout machines in a closet so you can advertise you have a workout room. So back I went to 24 Hour Fitness dragging 20 more pounds with me.

The club has a good mix of folks. There are enough of us out-of-shape old dogs that we can workout at a sensible rate without trying to keep up with 6-pack ab crowd. I like to go at about 4pm. I can get there just before the 5pm crowd when finding a treadmill or elliptical machine is impossible. And, I get out of there in time for dinner at Whole Foods. Going to Borders Books is a great way to keep from becoming a couch potato in front of the TV.

The other night after leaving 24 Hour Fitness, I went over to Whole Foods in the Shops at Bishop Ranch complex and had a bite to eat. Then I walked over to Borders Books with my bag of reading material. There was an article in the East Bay Business Times on Carl C. Liebert lll, the CEO of 24 Hour Fitness. Surprise to me – 24 Hour Fitness is headquartered right here in San Ramon, CA.

Given that, I just had to write them up.

In the article, Liebert says one of the things he wants to address is the 100% turnover at 24 Hour Fitness. This is something I noticed in Utah, they went through staff faster than fitness memberships after the New Year’s resolutions wear off.

If Carl C. Liebert lll ever reads this post, I want to mention the two things that irk me the most at the club.

  • People on the cardio machines yelling into their cell phones.
  • Half lockers – at least in Utah they had a mix of full size – and you guys just remodeled the locker rooms.

I could share at least one marketing idea with Carl that his corporation seems to have overlooked. Who knows, maybe he'll email me and I can claim to have been a marketing consultant to 24 hour Fitness!

If you are moving into San Ramon, I highly recommend 24 Hour Fitness – give me a shout and I will get you a couple of day passes so you can check it out.

San Ramon Generation Y First-Time Buyer

Gen Y'er Buys First Home in San Ramon

san ramon generation x real estateGary Becker, 24 years old, stands outside his new condo in the Copper Ridge complex off Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon.

He is part of the emerging new generation of home buyers that are entering the home-buying market. Eighty percent of Gen X'ers & Gen Y'ers use the Internet to search for homes.

Being one of the top salespeople at Anderson's TV in Dublin, CA., has afforded Gary the opportunity to take advantage of what many consider to be a buyer's market in San Ramon.

"…as a first time buyer, I was very impressed with all the support you provided, educating me on the real estate market and helping me find the perfect home. I have dreamed of getting into a home of my own, but did not expect it to happen at only 24 years old. Not only were you patient working with me to find the perfect deal, but the way you handled all the problems that developed during the escrow process with the seller and title company, I could have never gotten through it on my own. All I can say is THANKS! and you will be hearing from me in the future when I am ready to move up to a larger property."   Gary Becker

There are still a few good deals left in the San Ramon Valley for first time buyers.
